I’m seeing a bunch of crap on twitter saying hand sanitizer won’t work against coronavirus. Hand sanitizer is not the best sanitizing method, as hand washing will always be superior, but it will work when hand washing isn’t an option. Most hand sanitizers are made with some form of alcohol. Lipid coated viruses, like the coronavirus, are very sensitive to alcohol. That’s why we use it so extensively in the lab and in healthcare facilities. If you have hand sanitizer, make sure it’s at least 60% alcohol. It can be ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol or simply ‘SD’ alcohol. Don’t trust those “all natural” ones that don’t have an actual anti-microbial as an active ingredient. And make sure you thoroughly rub in the sanitizer.

Or even better, wash your hands. Anytime you’ve got the choice, always choose hand washing.
